When you need help with your mortgage the first place that you should contact is your nearest social services agency. That is the place that helps people - especially those that are considered low-income. They should know of a program that can help you.
You should also check your own state's website to see if you or a family member is on the list for unclaimed money. A lot of people over look this kind of resource because they usually don't know anything about it. But most - if not all - state websites should have something mentioned about unclaimed money in that state! I believe that California has something like just over 2 Billion Dollars in unclaimed money - and this is money that is not being claimed! If it is not claimed in a certain amount of time then the state gets that money.
Another resource that you can look into - but will require a lot more "digging" on your part - would be to look at the fine print of your mortgage. May be there is something in there that can help you. When you are behind on your mortgage some lenders are required to send you information to help you - which includes providing you with information on places / programs that can help you.
